Mumbai: Youth writes exam for school friend, held

Mumbai: The LT Marg police have arrested a 20-year-old youth for allegedly appearing for an exam in place of his friend in a South Mumbai-based school. Identified as Yusuf Abdul Razzaq, a resident of Wadala (E), the accused agreed to sit for a Std X English paper for his friend who feared that he would flunk since he was not good in the language.

According to the police, Razzaq had appeared for the paper, conducted in an English medium school at Dr Vegas Street in the Chira Bazaar area, at 10am on Monday.

"Razzaq completed the paper and submitted it to the examiner. But the examiner noticed that Razzaq's signature on the answer sheet was different from that on the hall ticket. But the hall ticket had the photograph of Razzaq. The police present at the examination centre were informed about this," said senior inspector Arun Borude of LT Marg police station.

Borude added that on searching Razzaq the police recovered two identity cards. One card was of India International Trade Centre and the other was a first-year (commerce) card of Dr Ambedkar College of Commerce. The police are verifying whether the cards are genuine or not.

Razzaq told the police that he appeared for the exam for his friend Sahil Iqbal Bhatkar, 19, a resident of Wadi Bunder.

"Razzaq said Bhatkar was not good in English and had approached him to write the paper for him. The hall ticket was tampered with. But he said that he did not do it for money. The police caught Bhatkar as he was waiting outside the centre for Razzaq," said Borude.

The duo has been booked on the charge of cheating by impersonation and remanded in police custody till Tuesday.
