Come January 15 and Mumbai could go with an entire day in the week without water. The civic body's proposal comes as only 200 days of water remains after the city received 30 per cent less rainfall than last year. Mumbaikars are promising to be more water conscious.
The morning scramble to fill water could soon take a feverish pitch. The city corporation has proposed a 100 percent water cut once a week in different parts of the city by rotation. This to ensure that the water in the city's reservoirs lasts till the next monsoon.
In 2009 Mumbai received 30 per cent less rainfall in comparison to 2008. The result was that supply to homes has already been cut by 15 per cent. And to commercial establishments by 30 per cent.
Loss due to water theft is another big cause of worry. Nearly 20 per cent of the water is lost each day through leaks and being stolen from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pipes.
Commenting on water theft Additional Commissioner, BMC, Anil Diggikar said, "We have disconnected 742 illegal connections and seized 327 booster pumps. We have also arrested 104 persons."
