Murder convict dies after self-immolation attempt

Indore: A convict facing execution in a triple murder case died of burn injuries following self-immolation attempt at a government hospital on Thursday morning.

Shafiq (47) died at the MY Hospital around 2 am, the Central Jail Superintendent, Purushottam Sonkanwar, said.

He had set himself afire in the Central jail on the intervening night of August 8 and 9.

A Bhopal Court had awarded him death sentence on January 18, 2010 for the murder of his wife and two daughters. He was shifted to the central jail here for the execution of death sentence this January.

In his statement after trying to kill himself, Shafiq had said that he had been granted death sentence but he did not want to "die every day", so he attempted to immolate himself.

Meanwhile, contradicting reports that jail inmates kept a fast on the Independence Day to press some demands, the Superintendent said nobody had gone on fast.
