Nashik: Community members accuse panchayat of tyrannical behaviour

Nashik: Around half a dozen families of the Joshi Bhatke community have lodged a complaint in Nashik's Gangapur police station against their panchayat after being allegedly ostracised from the community for marrying their children outside the community.

Rohini Sasane, a middle aged housewife whose eldest daughter married outside the community, is among the families who had come to register their complaint.

"They don't allow us to attend any community weddings. I am banned from meeting my parents or siblings. I have two daughters who are of marriageable age but I can't look for proposals within the community simply because my eldest daughter married outside it", she says.

"It's a serious matter, we have registered an offence case today against the Gram Panchayat and have arrested the six Panchas," city's DCP Sahebrao Patil said after meeting the community members and hearing their complaints today.

Eknath Kumbharkar, belonging to the Joshi Bhatka community, allegedly strangled his pregnant daughter, who had married outside the community, last week in an autorickshaw in Nasik. Police are now investigating if he was under pressure from the Panchayat to act against his daughter.
