New Delhi:
A Delhi court on Wednesday sentenced two brothers to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for carrying explosives in battery-operated toys to trigger blasts on the eve of the New Year day in 2007 in the national capital and for being involved in terrorist activities.
"Convicts have been found in possession of IED. The prosecution has been able to prove that the convicts were carrying explosives in battery-operated toys with detonators and dry cells the convicts were nabbed by the police before they could drop the IED at some vantage point in
densely-populated areas," the court noted.
Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh each on 23-year-old Shamiullah Sheikh, and his elder brother 38-year-old Ali Mohd Sheikh, besides the jail term.
The court held them guilty under various provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and IPC.
In its judgement, the court pointed out that the prosecution has proved that the convicts were out to carry out blasts in the capital on the New Year day.
"The prosecution has been able to probe that the convicts were acting in pursuance of a criminal conspiracy so as to cause bomb blasts and thereby cause mayhem, loss of life and
property, besides, creating panic, fear and sense of despondency.
"The very fact that the act was to be carried out on the eve of the New Year Day also assumes significance," the court said.
