A newly married couple and five others died in an accident in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor while returning home after their wedding. A car had rammed their auto while overtaking another vehicle on National Highway-74 on a foggy Saturday morning, said police.
The bride and the groom tied the knot in Jharkhand last evening. On their way back to their hometown in Bijnor's Dhampur, they hired an auto from the Moradabad railway station.
Bijnor Superintendent of Police Abhishek said the accident occurred due to dense fog. The car rammed the auto while changing lanes to overtake a vehicle, he added.
The bride, the groom, and four members of the groom's family were killed on the spot while the auto's driver died during treatment, the top official informed. Two others were taken to a community health centre with injuries.
The driver of the car, who also was injured in the collision, has been charged, said police.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the deaths and wished speedy recovery to the injured. He has also directed district officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured and expedite relief work.
