For 24 hours, a leading hospital in Mumbai was in a state of near-emergency, with a power crisis.

A short circuit led to a minor fire on Monday morning at the Bombay Hospital near Churchgate Station. Till Tuesday afternoon, the privately-owned hospital's Intensive Care Units and 22 Operating Theatres were forced to rely on generators.

Close to 700 patients and their families were in acute discomfort. The private hospital has four buildings. In most, elevators were not working. Nor were air conditioners.  Fans and lights were used sparingly.

Patients who had appointments for medical tests were sent back home.
