After the downpour on Monday night, the capital, getting a costly makeover for the Commonwealth Games, looked anything but a world-class city.
(Rain, traffic chaos in Delhi: Your photos)The debris from massive constructions blocked drains and thousands were stuck for hours on the road forcing the Chief Minister to issue the civic body a clean-up deadline.
"We are trying to get rid of water-logging everywhere. The public should let us know if there are areas we have missed. It's true that construction debris have a part to play. Also yesterday's rain was unusually heavy. We had announced August 10 as the deadline for clearing the rubble. Let the deadline arrive," said Shiela Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi.
"The way construction work is progressing, the clean-up would take another two-and-a-half months," said a Delhiite.
Another person said, "I don't think the deadline will be met."
The concerns are not unjustified considering the June 30 deadline was missed.
The rain is certainly making construction work more difficult and even now. Just outside the CM's office, the pavements are being dug up and new ones laid and while the CM has set a new deadline. The fact is that Delhi may witness more digging of roads and pavements for the Commonwealth Games in the days to come which may lead to more chaos.
