Not ready to 'friend' Facebook: Police

Mumbai: Perhaps smitten by the traffic police's disastrous experience with social networking, the police department on Monday told the Bombay high court that it is not feasible for it to launch a Facebook profile at this stage, but that it will reconsider the suggestion in consultation with the home department.

A single-page report by special inspector general (law and order) GD Pol was submitted to the division bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and PD Kode who are hearing a petition filed by Ashwini, the wife of slain Pune builder Nikhil Rane.

Only last week, the judges had suggested that the police create accounts on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to interact with the public and to inform them about the status of their complaints.

Ashwini had moved the high court earlier this year seeking transfer of probe to an independent agency since there was no progress in the matter.

Public prosecutor Pandurang Pol sought time to frame comprehensive guidelines to be followed by the police force when there is no progress in investigations.

It will be formulated on the lines of the Crime Investigation Department's (CID) manual, Pol said. The judges wondered if it was also possible to ape the CID's regular meetings for discussing the status of cases under investigation.

Pol replied that the CID is a specialised branch and can therefore concentrate on a particular case on a regular basis. He added that the local crime branch also conducts investigations on a day-to-day basis.

The judges posted the matter after four weeks.

Rane was critically injured on November 23, 2009, when gangsters fired at him from close range. He succumbed to injuries a week later. Four persons were arrested.
