Ahmedabad:
It might look like an unimportant development, but this is a move that reflects serious differences within members of the state's ruling party. Some civic poll candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in a first ever move in the party's history, have decided to not rely on party workers for distribution of voter's slips. The same are being outsourced to courier companies instead.
Certain BJP candidates, who are said to have managed tickets with the help of influential leaders in the party, are now facing the non cooperation and ire of party workers. Usually, it is these workers who distribute the voter's slips, by going door to door. This process of distribution stands the candidate in good stead when he goes about campaigning, and also plays a role in the number of voters who actually turn up on the day of the election.
Considering these two roles, distribution of these slips proves to be a crucial exercise for party workers.
But considering the lack of support from the workers this time, certain candidates have decided that they'd rather have courier companies delivering the slips. "Certain candidates in the party are not sure whether the party workers will sincerely do their job. Hence, they're contemplating assigning the task to courier companies instead," said a local BJP worker.
The worker also added that some candidates have already approached courier companies for the task. "I was approached by a couple of candidates for distribution of voters' slips.
However, it is not a viable task for us to deliver slips to each and every home," said an official from a prominent courier company. This situation prevails particularly in wards where local and prominent workers are not taking interest in the election process.
Candidates inexperienced in political battles are not willing to take any chance. They are also sceptical about using local workers as polling agents on the day of election and are nominating close relatives or friends.
