Mumbai:
Thieves do accept cheques, it seems.
That's what 76-year-old electronics shop owner from Colaba, Mansoor Nagree, learnt when six men barged into his shop. They stole cash and also made him sign a cheque of Rs 2 lakh.
One of the thieves, Sonu Singh Rana, was his former employee. He had been sacked two years ago after he was caught stealing. His mother works as a cook at Nagree's residence.
Last week, the police arrested Rana and three of his accomplices Hitesh Verma, Soban Singh and Amul Pagare, two months after the incident.
The accused have been lodged at Arthur Road Jail, while two others Raju and Vijay are absconding.
On March 18, at 7.30 am, the accused entered Nagree Electronics in Navy Nagar, and assaulted Nagree.
They kept hitting him, tied him with a rope and started looking for cash. When they couldn't find enough cash, they asked Nagree to sign a cheque for Rs 2 lakh.
"They punched me on the nose and kept hitting me continuously, breaking my ribs," said Nagree. "I was surprised when they asked me for a cheque."
Assistant Police Inspector KI Wani of MRA Marg police station, said, "We have booked the culprits under IPC Sections 395 and 452."
