Owners will henceforth have to prove where their pet dogs reside. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to citizens to get their pet dogs registered and residential proof is necessary for the registration.
An official of the health department of the PMC has made an appeal to the public to note that it is necessary for citizens to register their pet dogs at the PMC under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act, 1949.
He said citizens should contact the health department office in the nearest ward office for registration of pet dogs. It is necessary to use specified form H-11 from the citizens facilitation centre (CFC) of the ward office.
Applicants should attach a certificate that the dog has been given anti-rabies vaccine and also proof of residence.
Last month, in the general body (GB) of the civic body, corporators complained about the menace of stray dogs. The civic administration had claimed that the problem could be contained within two years by employing more personnel and using more vans.
In-charge of health department, Dr RR Pardeshi, in reply to points raised by corporators, had informed the house that there were an estimated 40,000 stray dogs in the city.
The civic body has started a survey of the dogs and until now, it has found 28,000.
It uses six vans to catch the dogs and daily 25 to 30 dogs were caught for sterilisation in the last three months.
He informed the house that there were 650 registered pet dogs in the city.
He said the employees of PMC and the NGO Blue Cross, which has been assigned the task of sterilising the dogs, caught 4,800 dogs last year.
The target this year is 10,000 dogs. The dogs are released after sterilisation.
He said if 14 vans are provided, one for each ward office, with four helpers and four technical persons and action is taken using the survey, the menace of stray dogs could be controlled within two years.
He said the birth control scheme of stray dogs was started in 1994, as it was not legally permitted to kill the dogs.
