Obama's date with India's Gen Next

New Delhi: After a tribute to 26/11 victims, and wowing India Inc, US President Barack Obama heads to Delhi today for a two-day stopover.

But before the date with Delhi, Obama is meeting school and college students in Mumbai on Sunday morning.

Children of Holy Name School had been preparing for weeks for their moment with the US President. Barack and Michelle Obama hit the dance floor to a foot-tapping Marathi folk number, joining a group of students at the school to participate in symbolic Diwali festivities.

The Obamas, who lit a lamp to mark the celebrations, were greeted by the students in traditional Indian attire as they interacted with the children, shaking hands and posing for pictures. The students were seen gleefully clicking the couple's photos using cellphone cameras.

The cheering and clapping Obamas seemed so charmed by the tune and the performance of the children during the 'Koli' dance -- which gives expression to the culture and identity of Maharashtrian fisherfolk -- that they joined the students and danced with them. The US President then visited St Xavier's College, where he first interacted with villagers from Kanpura, near Ajmer in Rajasthan, via video conferencing. After a short introduction by National Knowledge Commission chairman Sam Pitroda, Obama spoke to the villagers who shared the benefits of broadband penetration - from online medical consultation, education and local e-governance. The US President expressed happiness about the progress being made with the aid of IT.

The Obamas then interacted with students at St Xavier's. While addressing the students, the US President said that Washington will not mediate between India and Pakistan.

"The US will not impose that on India and Pak, they have to arrive at their own understanding," said Obama. (Read: We will not mediate between India and Pakistan, says Obama)

He also said that Pakistan is a strategically important country for the world and he will work with Pakistan to eradicate terrorism.

After the packed Mumbai morning, the Obamas head to Delhi a little after one in the afternoon. 

In the Capital, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will receive him, security agencies are taking no chances, and a multi-layered security in is in place. There is tight security at the ITC Maurya hotel where President Obama will stay during his visit. (Read: PM to personally receive Obama at Delhi airport)
