Octroi plazas to go hi-tech soon

Thane: The octroi department of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is all set to go hi-tech. As part of the overhaul, the TMC has planned complete computerisation of all 18 octroi plazas under its jurisdiction.

Besides, close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the plazas, VHF (very high frequency) communication system for its employees at the plazas and GPS (global positioning system) technology in octroi vehicles are some of the other plans that would be implemented soon.

The 18 octroi plazas which registered a collection of more than Rs 350 crore last year, had hitherto been operating manually. However, with computerisation, officers expect work to speed up without any mistakes.

"The installation of computers will result in more authentic records of octroi collection with hardly any room for errors," said BG Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner (octroi).
The process of installation of computers is over and should become functional soon.

Moreover, the process of computerisation would also enable officers to keep a track of octroi records at the click of the mouse.

Vigilance at the plazas will get a boost due to the CCTV cameras which have been installed at all the 18 plazas.

"The footage will be monitored to keep a vigil on anyone who tries to evade octroi," Pawar said.

To support vigilance, communication between officers and staff at the octroi plazas will be upgraded by way of VHF communication systems.

The corporation also plans to install GPS in octroi vehicles so that senior officers can keep track of the whereabouts of their employees on field.

TMC officials said the project cost would be Rs 3 crore.

Pawar was unavailable to confirm.
