Srinagar: The Old Srinagar city, known as downtown in local parlance and famous for street protests, will soon have an entry gate at a cost of Rs one crore.
"The gate, which will be the entry point for the old city, is being constructed by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation with an estimated cost of Rs one crore," an official spokesman said here.
He said the gate will be named after leading philosopher of the sub-continent Dr Sir Mohammad Iqbal and will be designed according to the traditional architecture of the Valley.
The proposed site was inspected by State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar on Sunday.
