One person has jumped from the Stephen House building and has been taken to hospital, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Javed Shamin has said, describing the situation as "grim."
A major fire has broken out in the multi-storied building on the busy Park street area in Kolkata. Nearly 100 firemen are battling the fire, which started from a lift onto the fifth and sixth floors, fire-brigade sources said.
Shamim told NDTV that people are trapped on the fifth and sixth floor of the building. "The situation is grim. People are trying to use ducts and ledges and parapets to come down," he said.
The senior policeman said the primary job was to rescue people trapped. He said hydraulic ladders were on their way and manual ladders were being used. The fire was not in control totally, he said.
The joint commissioner hoped the casualties would not be too high.
