Orissa: Rusticated for ragging, students move High Court

Cuttack: Three of the five students of a city-based architecture college, who were rusticated for their alleged involvement in ragging, have moved the Orissa High Court (HC) against the suspension order issued by the institution.

The single-judge bench of HC comprising Justice R N Biswal has admitted the pleas of the students and has issued notices to the Orissa government and Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) that had rusticated the students. The case would be heard on October 10.

Devaditya Das, Aurojit Moitra and Pabitra Sahu of Piloo Mody College of Architecture have challenged the BPUT's order in the court on Monday stating that they were not involved in ragging and claimed the incident that occurred in the campus on August 7 was an outcome of a previous rivalry.

Along with the three, two other students - Gourab Dasmohapatra and Anwesika Sahu - were also rusticated from the college for two years and the college was directed not to admit them for two academic sessions for allegedly inflicting grievous injuries on a junior student.
