Salem, Tamil Nadu: Gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 40 lakh were recovered on Wednesday within six hours of being allegedly stolen, police said.
Mahesh alias Velraj, an employee of a jewellery polishing shop, was arrested at around 4:30 am on Thursday at the new bus stand for allegedly stealing the ornaments, Salem City Commissioner of Police, C Chokkalingam, told reporters.
Mahesh had worked at the shop run by complainant Palaniswamy for one month before disappearing on Tuesday with the ornaments after being entrusted with looking after them, he said.
Following a complaint by Palaniswamy, a special team arrested Mahesh in the wee hours on Tursday, Chokkalingam said. All the stolen ornaments were recovered from him, he added.
