Over 2,100 people fined for violating Games lanes
New Delhi: Over 2,100 people were caught by traffic police in the national capital in the past over a fortnight for illegally straying into the lanes earmarked for Commonwealth Games related traffic.

A total of 2,107 were found violating the norms and out of this, 1,914 were challaned on-the-spot which helped government coffers swell by Rs 38.28 lakh since September 23 when the Games lanes became operational.

"A total of 1,914 challans were issued and 293 sent as notices," Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic), told reporters.

Straying into the exclusive lanes attracts a fine of Rs 2,000 or impounding of vehicles or both.

Garg said the Games lanes will be functional till October 17 when the last batch of athletes and officials leave the city after the Games end this Thursday.

All the Games lanes will be operational till October 14 but the next three days, it will be operational only between Indira Gandhi International Airport, Games Village and Hotel Ashok where family members of athletes and officials are staying.

Garg said 300-400 athletes have left the city on Monday.
