Panaji: Kidnapping accused attempts suicide in court room

Panaji: An accused of kidnapping attempted suicide in the court room after his judicial custody was extended, police said.

Twenty four-year-old  Salim Sheikh attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a sharp object in Goa Children's Court when it extended his judicial remand, they said.

The accused was rushed to Goa Medical College at Aambolim.

Mumbai-based Saleem is accused of kidnapping his four-year-old nephew from Mapusa town, 10 km away from Panaji.

He had asked for a ransom of Rs 50,000 from victim's grandfather, who is a rag picker in the city.

Saleem was arrested in Mumbai on September 15 and was initially remanded in police custody. The court today remanded him in 14 days judicial custody.

Public Prosecutor Poonam Bharne said that the accused was uneasy after the order and tried to cut his throat from a sharp object which appeared in his hand from nowhere.

The judge was busy writing the final order when incident happened inside the court room. The court ordered Mapusa police, investigating the kidnapping case, to file a case of attempt to suicide against the accused, the prosecutor said.
