Ranchi:
For every bucket of water that you use in Ranchi, you might have to soon shell out a token
amount of money to the government.
"To prevent wastage there are plans to introduce (consumption charges of) fifty paise or Re 1 per bucket of water. We will work it out after discussing with the authorities of the municipal corporation on what should be the exact amount," Deputy Chief Minister Hemant Soren told reporters.
The government estimates that around thirty percent of water is being wasted through the 172 public water supply points in the city.
"Committees comprising ward members will be formed to monitor proper water service without any wastage," Soren, who also holds the drinking and sanitation portfolio, said.
"Water to Ranchi is catered from three reservoirs. While Getalsud reservoir has water till June, Hatia and Kanke reservoirs can cater water till February and March respectively," he said and expected a good monsoon next year after two drought years.
Stating that there would a weekly review on the drinking water problem, he asked people not to waste water nor create panic at water crisis as the government was prepared to
meet any eventuality.
