Thane:
A police escort taking undertrials to the Thane court was beaten and abused by an undertrial in the Thane Central Jail, the Thane police said on Friday.
Police sub-inspector K S Gaikwad of the Thane Nagar police station said that a police escort including constable Atul Suresh Bhoye had taken a couple of undertrials from the Thane Central Jail to the court for a hearing.
During the visit to the court, one of the undertrials, Kiran Kumaraswamy Chettiar (22) of Ghansoli, was not allowed to meet his father.
Bearing this grudge in mind, the undertrial abused the constable Bhoye and another constable who was part of the police escort.
The accused allegedly beat up the constables, the complaint filed by the police constable, at the Thane Nagar police station said.
Besides Chettiar, another criminal Sunil Nanasaheb Kedar was also taken to the court for the trial and brought back to the jail, where the incident took place on Thursday noon, the complaint said.
The police has registered an offence under Sections 353 and 332 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Chettiar and further investigations are on, the police said.
