Police held nine persons, averted robberies

Mumbai: In two separate incidents, police on Friday claimed to have averted two robbery attempts in the city with the arrest of nine persons and recovered revolvers and sharp weapons.

Acting on a tip off, police laid a trap and nabbed Anilkumar Rajput, Shivanand Pande and Yousuf Nirani from suburban Kandivali when they along with their two more associates arrived there to loot a jewellery shop on Thursday evening, police said.

Three revolvers, 12 live rounds and one chopper were recovered from them, police said adding that their two associates - Sunil and Pankaj escaped from the scene.

In another case at Sion Koliwada area in central Mumbai, six accused-Velamurugan Devendra, Murugan Devendra, Ganesh Devendra, Periswami Devendra, Ashkel Devendra and Mohammed Yusuf Shaikh were caught with weapons near Sainath bar last evening, police said.

Acting on a tip off, the six were caught with two knives, one hockey stick, one nylon rope, an iron cutter, two packets of chilly powder and one two-wheeler, they added.

Two more associates of these accused had managed to escape from the spot, police said adding they were also planning either to rob a jewellery shop or any other shop.
