Posing as priest, he conned worshippers

Tirunelveli: A self-styled priest and seven members of his gang, who cheated people to the tune of several lakh of rupees by selling copper 'kalasams' (an ornament atop temple towers) after making them believe that it would turn into gold if 'abhishekam' is performed with "rice", has been arrested.

People were tricked into believing that kalasams would bring them luck and prosperity, police said.

The fake priest Petchimuthu and the seven gang members were arrested on Tuesday.

The arrested included the husband of a police woman, police said, adding, the gang had cheated many people in various districts in the state.
