Prisoner 'cops out' the police

Mumbai: The Navghar police were left red-faced when an accused, brought to the police station on a molestation charge, escaped.

Kapil Patil (25), slipped away from the police station minutes after he was brought there on charge of molesting a 13 year-old girl residing in Mulund East. He was brought to the police station after the victim registered a complaint.

Senior police inspector Shrimant Ghule confirmed the incident and said the accused slipped out of the police station around 7 am. A police team was sent in search of the absconding Patil.

It is learnt that the police made entries in their register stating that the accused was released on bail, in order to save face and their jobs. They then brought the accused's father to the police station and detained him until the accused returned in the afternoon. The police have put two guards on duty to ensure that the accused does not escape again.

The Navghar police is tight-lipped about the issue. Ghule added, "We are registering another offence against the accused for escaping from police custody."

Additional Commissioner of Police, East Region, Ramesh Kumar said, "The police have been instructed to register an appropriate case against the accused."
