A 63-year-old professor of the prestigious St Stephens College allegedly jumped to death from the second floor of his south Delhi residence, apparently due to depression.
Mahesh Chander Jain, Professor in Chemistry department, was found dead on the courtyard of his residence in Greater Kailash by his wife at around 8:30 am and police suspect that he jumped from the window of a second floor room, a senior police official said.
A suicide note has been recovered from Jain's possession in which he claimed that no one else is responsible for his death and he was taking the extreme step as he was depressed.
"The professor was under depression for the past ten years and was under medication," the official said.
Jain was last seen by his wife Sudha and daughter, who have come over to meet them, at around 10 pm when he went to his bedroom to sleep. Sudha was watching TV at that time and went asleep later.
In the morning, she found Jain lying in a pool of blood in the courtyard and informed police. He was rushed to AIIMS where he was declared brought dead.
Jain was teaching at St Stephens for the past over 30 years and was to retire very soon. He was on leave from January. He had gone to the campus on February 15 to attend a function there.
He is survived by wife, three sons and a daughter who is married. One of his sons is based in US while the others are settled in Bangalore.
