Puducherry: Women`s commission initiative sees marriage registration

Puducherry: More than 5,000 couples who had entered into wedlock years ago and had not registered their marriages have now done it through a special drive by the State Women`s Commission.

Official sources said that camps held in Puducherry and Karaikal regions at regular intervals had evoked good response. The drive through such camps commenced a year ago in a village in Villianoor Assembly segment.

A similar exercise drive would be held later on Tuesday at Krimambakkam village in Bahoor Assembly segment where around 1200 more couples would be issued registration certificates, official sources said.

The guidelines from the higher court and Legal Aid Cell has been the base for the drive.

Commission chairperson Kamalini said they have built an awareness among local people, particularly in rural areas, on the importance of marriage registration as it would be of help to tackle several exigencies.
