Pune:
A 90-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her 55-year-old sister-in-law on Friday in the blind belief that she had killed the accused's husband and son-in-law using black magic (karni).
The Khadak police arrested the suspect identified as Ratan Ashok Bhalekar of Sadashiv Peth.
The deceased was identified as Sitabai Marutrao Pawar of Sadashiv Peth.
Senior inspector of Khadak police station GV Nikam said Ratan was mentally unstable after her husband and son-in-law died few days ago. "It was known that her husband was addicted to liquor and had died due to excessive consumption. Her son-in-law, an autorickshaw driver in Nagpur, died due to some other reasons."
Nikam said Ratan believed that both of them died because of Sitabai's black magic. "She also believed that Sitabai was trying to create differences between her and her children." said Nikam.
The accused and the deceased used to have frequent quarrels in the past.
Following another quarrel on Friday around 7 am, Ratan allegedly assaulted Sitabai with a wooden stick and iron rods.
"Around 3 pm, Ratan's children found Sitabai lying in a pool of blood in her room in Sadashiv Peth and informed the police," Nikam said.
Local residents told the police that they had heard a heated argument between Ratan and Sitabai in the morning.
The police arrested Ratan, who was produced before the court on Saturday. The court remanded her in police custody for six days. The Khadak police station has registered a complaint.
