Pune: Fergusson student commits suicide

Pune: The 22-year-old Prashant Chitalkar killed himself on Monday allegedly after he was ragged by nine people, including four of his seniors.

His family says, "Prashant a second year student of Pune's Fergussan Law College had attempted suicide 15 days ago too, but failed. Last week he returned home, once again complaining of harassment."

Commenting on the incident Prashant's brother Pramod Chitalkar said, "A boy called Sharat Bhande called my brother on January 21 and abused him on phone."

"They have registered a ragging case against four people. Based on what he told them they have given in written the mental torture he was subjected to," said Police Inspector M Bagwan of the Rahuri Police Station.

Fergussan College authorities say they have a stringent no ragging policy. On the face of it there's no evidence to prove Prashant was even ragged.

Commenting on the incident, Principal of the Fergusson Law College Rohini Honap said, "We have checked the attendance. The boy was not attending the college. He had also stopped staying at the college hostel. So no question of ragging."

However, the college has set-up a three member committee to enquire into the case.

The Rahuri police have now transferred the case to Pune, which has started investigations to find out if harassment by other students was indeed the reason behind Prashant's suicide.
