Pune: Former sarpanch, son killed for practising witchcraft

Pune: The Pune rural police have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of a former village sarpanch and his son at Majgaon hamlet in Velha tehsil of the district on October 18.
Vitthal Krishna Vharey (60) and Sunil (33) were killed for allegedly practising witchcraft.

The police have charged the victims' cousins Kailas Haribhau Vharey, Ramesh Ramchandra Vharey, Bajirao Kondiba Vharey and Eknath Balu Vharey for killing the father-son duo.
The suspects have been remanded in police custody till October 25.

According to rural SP Pratap Dighavkar, the suspects harboured doubts that Vitthal had practised witchcraft and sorcery on their families leading to continuous deaths in their clan in recent past.

"The murder took place on October 18 between 8.45 and 9 am when the suspects attacked Vitthal with swords. When Sunil reached the spot to save his father, he too was murdered by the attackers," Dighavkar said.

According to the Velha police, the plan to eliminate their uncle Vitthal was hatched when Kailash, Ramesh and Eknath came from Mumbai and Bajirao from Ahmedabad to their village to celebrate Dassera.

When Vitthal's wife saw her husband being attacked near their residence, she telephoned Sunil, who reached the spot after an hour and was also killed on the spot by the relatives, the police said.
