Pune lecturer commits suicide on birthday

Pune: Manisha Surve, an IT lecturer, killed herself by hanging with a dupatta from the ceiling fan of her bedroom on Sunday. Haveli police have registered a case of suicide.

Resident of Ghule Nagar's Aveneer Society, Surve was a lecturer at Sinhagad College. She is survived by her husband Prasanna, an IT professional and a four-month-old son Presheet.

Manisha's parents Yadunath Bawale and Sanjiwani had left her place and were on their way to their native place Beed. "I fed her the birthday cake this morning," said Yadunath in tears.

Her husband Prasanna said that the incident took place when he was not at home. They were married for three years and had recently shifted to their new apartment. "I had never expected this. It still seems like a nightmare. I can't believe this happened," he said. He did not know the reason why Manisha took this extreme step.

"She was exhausted and under emotional pressure as our son was not well and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital at Shivajinagar. She was irritated and not in a good mood and was on leave to take care of our son," said Prasanna.

The Haweli police, who are investigating the case were waiting for the post-mortem formalities to finish at Sassoon Hospital.

Police Inspector Satish Patil and police constable Jadhav said that there was no suicide note in the bedroom. "We are yet to know the exact reason behind her act," Patil said.
