Pune: Lover sets man on fire after tiff

Pune: A woman in Pune has been accused of setting her lover on fire. The victim, a construction worker named Sunil Ahirrao, is fighting for his life in hospital.

The accused was identified as Jamila Shaikh who works at a massage parlour in the city. Police says another man, Jubair Jabbar Shaikh, whom Jamila considered her brother, was the second accused in the case.

The incident took place on Tuesday at an isolated stretch in Salisbury Park near Advetis Hospital at 8.30 pm. Senior Police Inspector Rajkumar Gaikwad of the Swargate police station said Ahirrao, a Chinchwad resident, came to Salisbury Park to meet his girlfriend, with whom he had an argument.

Jubair, a notorious criminal, also reached the spot where Ahirrao was meeting Jamila and asked him to return some money he had given him.

"Jubair Shaikh was involved in 10 serious offenses, including housebreaking, robbery and extortion," said Gaikwad.

After an argument, Jubair and Jamila poured kerosene on Ahirrao and set him ablaze, said the police.

Ahirrao, who suffered serious burn injuries in the incident, is married with two children, while Jamila was separated from her husband and living with her daughter in the Lohiya Nagar slums.

At the hospital, Ahirrao's relatives refused to speak on the incident.
