Pune:
A 26-year-old mother allegedly committed suicide along with her three-and-a-half-year-old son and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter by setting herself and them on fire in Premnagar slum at Market Yard at 12.30 pm on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Devaki Prabhakar Mungale (26), son Chetan and daughter Iccha. A local resident, Krushna Sonkambale, told reporters that the slum dwellers were alarmed on seeing flames arising out of Mungale's tenement.
They found that the door was locked from inside. Fire brigade personnel, who rushed to the spot, broke into the house and found that Devaki and her children had suffered nearly 100% burns and were lying near a 10-litre kerosene drum.
Inspector Gaikwad said prima facie Devaki had committed suicide by pouring kerosene on herself and her children and setting them ablaze.
Devaki lived with her two children, husband, mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law in the 15x10-foot tenement. Her husband, Prabhakar Chandrasha Mungale (30), is working with a construction company in Bibvewadi. Devaki, her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law worked with vegetable dealers. Gaikwad said Devaki's brother, Amar Jadhav (39), approached the police claiming that Devaki was facing harassment from her husband and other family members.
The police are investigating the case, he said.
