Pune: Municipal Council clerk nabbed for accepting bribe

Pune: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) sleuths of Pune arrested a Lonavla Municipal Council (LMC) clerk working in the education department for accepting a bribe of Rs10,000 on Wednesday afternoon. A peon was also nabbed.

Both the clerk, Shrikant Avadhut Dharake (36), and peon Vijay Dhondu Rajan (47) of Ghatkopar were produced before the court for police remand. Rajendra Vasudeo Kulkarni (27) of Lonavla has lodged a complaint with the ACB.

Deputy superintendent of police Sanjay Naik-Patil said the aunt of the complainant, a builder by profession, Supriya Taur (58) of Lonavla, retired as acting principal on July 31. In order to issue her a cheque for Rs7 lakh as retirement benefits, including PF, gratuity and pension, from the council, Dharake demanded Rs15,000 from Kulkarni. The clerk also took an advance of Rs5,000 from the complainant.

"Kulkarni approached the ACB and we laid a trap at hotel Shivkrupa Malvani located near the LMC building. When Rajan, who was designated by Dharake to accept the amount, visited the hotel around 2.20 pm and accepted the amount from Kulkarni, we nabbed him," Naik-Patil said.

Police inspectors Kanchan Jadhav, Sangita Patil, and Bharat Bhosale; assistant police inspector Ramesh Barge took part in nabbing the culprits.
