Pune: Rs 3 crore MRI machine lying idle for a year

Pune: The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine installed at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)-run Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) last year is yet to
become operational.

Even though the civic body had spent about Rs3 crore to buy the machine, it is yet to get a private party to operate the MRI centre on public-private partnership (PPP). As the tender floated last year created confusion, the civic body had to scrap it and issue a fresh one recently.

The YCMH director, AD Jagdale said, "The MRI machine is not functioning because there was nobody to operate it. As the PCMC has issued fresh tender, it will soon be operational."

The MRI facility is presently available in two hospitals in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area: at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (Thergaon) and Dr DY Patil Hospital (Pimpri).

PCMC sources said the MRI centre at YCMH will benefit patients as the rates will be lower than those charged by private hospitals.
