Pune varsity to install CCTV cameras to curb crime

Pune: Rattled by the ruckus created by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and continuous thefts on the University of Pune (UoP) campus, the authorities have installed closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) at its entry gates to keep a close watch on visitors.

While one CCTV camera has been installed at the main gate on Ganeshkhind Road, the other camera has been put up at the gate located near the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics.

"There will be one more camera at both the entry and exit points of the UoP," the varsity officials said. A UoP officer said that though there were security personnel at the gates, neither did they monitor the visitors nor did they check every vehicle visiting the UoP.

"We want to monitor everyone and every vehicle visiting the UoP in order to avoid tensions, thefts and other issues on the campus," he said.

The control room of the CCTV system, which is expected to cost Rs 5 lakh, will be located at the security in-charge's room near the main building. The UoP chief security officer will monitor it.

"Recently, computers from a department were stolen and suspects, who were insiders, used a car. Such incidents can be avoided," he said.

The CCTVs would monitor the functioning of the 138 security personnel, including 38 belonging to the UoP. The security personnel will be given walkie-talkies. "In the second phase, CCTV cameras will be installed at the entry gates of all departments. We installed a CCTV system at the International Students' Centre on the instructions of the city police after the German Bakery blast," he said.
