Pune:
Two army jawans have been arrested for raping a teenager 25 kilometres from Pune.
A 19-year-old girl was out with her boyfriend when his motorcycle ran out of gas. They were on army turf - Singvi. Two jawans spotted the couple and came upto them. The girl claims that they beat up her boyfriend and then took turns raping her. When they were done, they refused to return her cellphone to her, and left.
The girl and her boyfriend walked to the nearest police station.
"The men had taken the victim's cell phone from her and asked her to come back. She filed a complaint with us and we set a trap for them," says Vishnu Mane, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Zone.
The girl phoned her cellphone and fixed a meeting with the jawans. They asked her, once again, to see them in Singvi. The police escorted her to the meeting and then arrested the jawans.
Pune is still coming to terms with the graphic details of another rape case. Last week, an MBA graduate was gangraped in a moving car by three men in the IT hub of Hinjewadi. She had just moved back to Pune from the US and was on her way to a job interview when she saw a cab slowing down. Eight hours later, she was thrown on the roadside, battered and bleeding. The men who allegedly raped her stopped to buy biryani and beer before they took turns in attacking her.
All three men have been arrested.
Determined to prove its zero-tolerance for such crimes, the government has decided that case will be tried in a fast-track court with 26/11 prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam representing the state.
