An NRI was seriously injured on Thursday when police allegedly shot him, mistaking him to be the main accused in the murder of a village head here.

NRI Budh Singh Wala, who had arrived at his native Macchike village from Canada about two months back, was travelling in his vehicle along with his girl friend this morning, police said.

Police received a tip off that the assailants of former head of Daudhar village Rashpal Singh, who was murdered last Saturday at a grain market here, were travelling in a vehicle with tinted glasses. A police team chased the vehicle and on reaching near Ransihkalan village, they fired gun shots at it, seriously injuring the NRI.

The team, however, soon realised that it was a case of mistaken identity and that the injured person was an NRI and not the murder accused. The injured was admitted to a hospital at Ludhiana where his condition is stated to be stable.

Meanwhile, senior police officers had ordered a probe into the incident, sources said.
