Mumbai:
Want octroi abolished? Just drop in an email to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. At least, that is what traders in Mumbai have done.
Tired of the local government's dilly-dallying over their demand to abolish octroi, traders are now approaching Gandhi via this mass email campaign.
Already, 9,000 e-mails have been sent to Gandhi's official email address.
Traders have been demanding that octroi be abolished by the state.
"Last year, our delegation had met Rahul Gandhi in Delhi who promised that octroi would be abolished by 2009," said Sharad Ram Shejpal, convener of Bhiwandi Powerloom Association.
"The chief minister of Maharashtra had also promised the same," said Shejpal.
Convenor of Maharashtra Vyapari Mahasangha, Atul Shah, said, "Since April 17, we have started sending emails. People from different parts of the state have joined in the campaign which will continue till we receive a reply from Gandhi."
