Four incidents of building collapse were reported during the incessant rains, in which at least eight persons were injured in Sangam Vihar, Govindpuri, Bhalswa Dairy and Karol Bagh localities.
Three persons suffered injuries when the roof of their house in Sangam Vihar Block-I collapsed at around 1:15 pm due to rains while three others were wounded when a building near Guru Govind Singh Gurudwara in Govindpuri collapsed at around 1:45 pm.
The third incident of building collapse was reported from Bhalswa Dairy area at around 2 pm, while two others were injured when a structure collapsed in Karol Bagh late in the afternoon.
Though the sky was overcast from early morning, the showers began at 8:45 am. The city received 4.9 mm of rains for a period of 24 hours till 8:30 am on Thursday.
As the skies opened up, complaints of water-logging, traffic snarls and tree-felling poured in at the control rooms of civic bodies and police department.
"Things are better this time as compared to last time," was Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's reply when asked about water-logging in the city.
Commuters were seen taking shelter below flyovers and bus stops across the city. Many scooter riders parked their two-wheelers below bridges, resulting in shrinking of road space for vehicular movement.
Pushpanjali Bisht Kanunjna, a commuter, said traffic was disrupted near foot-over-bridges on Outer Ring Road at Greater Kailash-II and Kalkaji Temple as people parked their vehicles to save themselves from getting drenched.
Motorcyclists blocked the road to protect themselves from rain right at the start of the DND flyover from Ashram, resulting in huge traffic jams, another commuter Ankit Marwah said.
A large pothole today developed on Jaswant Singh Road near Andhra Bhavan where the road has caved-in twice in the past three days. Water-logging was also reported from the stretch resulting in traffic snarls on Ashoka Road.
Vehicular movement was slow on many of the busy stretches like Vikas Marg, Connaught Place, AIIMS, IIT, Outer Ring Road.
Traffic also moved at snail's pace on Badarpur Border, Azad Market and Kishan Ganj Railway crossing due to water logging.
Traffic movement was hit due to breakdown of several vehicles on Shivaji Park-Punjabi Bagh, Janakpuri-Dhaula Kuan, Hanuman Setu-ISBT, Mukarba Chowk-By Pass, Chandki Ram Akhra-Wazirabad, Wazirabad Bridge-Khajuri and Mehrauli-Mahipalpur routes.
Incidents of excess water was also reported from Minto Road, Ranjeet flyover, Kamla Market, Ajmeri Gate and Bagga Link to Pusa Road resulting in traffic hitches, a senior police official said.
Water-logging near Kamal-T Point also resulted in slow movement of vehicles on Rohtak Road this morning.
Vehicles were seen choc-a-bloc on the DND flyover which connects Delhi and Noida, AIIMS, South-Extention, Moti Bagh West, Nizamuddin and Vivekanand Marg.
Because of heavy rains, a senior police official said, traffic was diverted from Raj Ghat crossing on Ring Road towards Delhi secretariat.
