Rajasthan University teachers stage dharna against discriminatory order

Jaipur: Protests and demonstrations do their regular rounds in the Rajasthan University and on Sunday too it had its share of dharnas, this time staged by the assistant professors.

A circular dealing with the salary of the tutors, issued on Saturday triggered reaction among the assistant professors, virtually dividing them into two factions.

On Saturday the university vice-chancellor AD Sawant had issued an administrative notice fixing the salaries of the assistant professors who were regularised in August 2008 in view of the Sixth Pay Commission.

According to the order, over 120 teachers had been given only notional increments from January 2006, while another group of about 150 had been given arrears along with increments with effect from January 2006.

Aggrieved by this order, a delegation of teachers went to meet the vice-chancellor at his official residence in the university campus on Sunday. However the vice-chancellor declined to talk to the delegation of teachers.

Following this the teachers staged a dharna outside the vice-chancellor's residence.

Peace was brokered by some members of the university syndicate between the administration and the aggrieved teachers.

Later, the vice-chancellor agreed to review the administrative order and repeal it if necessary. Om Mahla, a teacher's leader said that the recent order of the vice-chancellor would adversely affect a big proportion of Rajasthan university teachers.

MS Chaturvedi, president of the Rajasthan University Teachers Association (RUTA) told DNA, "The delegation of assistant professors will meet the vice-chancellor on Monday. The delegation will bring the resentment of teachers in his knowledge." He added that the order is discriminatory as some of the teachers have been given only notional increments and deprived of their arrears.

The vice-chancellor while talking to the newspaper said, "There seems to be some confusion about the order issued on October 9 which created resentment among a faction of the assistant professors. I have assured them to review the order and if needed the order will be withdrawn."

The vice-chancellor added that as he was busy on Saturday he could not meet the teachers. "I did not avoid the teachers intentionally," he said.
