Rape victim missing, honour killing suspected

Muzaffarnagar: A local court has ordered filing of a criminal case against the custodial guardians of an alleged rape victim after she failed to turn up before it in a decade-old case.

The court order came amid police suspecting that she may be killed in a case of honour killing.

Kumari Shamistha of Toda village had eloped with her boyfriend Dinesh in 1996 but police traced her after three years and registered a case of abduction and rape against Dinesh and two others.

The court had then handed over her to the custody of her relatives Brahampal and Laleshwari.

However, when the case came up before the court on Wednesday, the girl, who is the main witness in the case, failed to appear before the court and could not be traced.

The court then ordered police to file criminal charges.
