Rapist's death sentence commuted to life imprisonment

Guwahati: The Guwahati High Court has commuted the death sentence of a man convicted of raping and killing a three-year old girl to life imprisonment.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice Amitava Roy and Justice P K Mushahari, commuted the death sentence of Sujit Biswas to life imprisonment till his death and not the usual 14 years.

Biswas, a rickshaw puller, had raped the child during Durga Puja in Paltan Bazaar area in Guwahati and she was found lying in a drain inside a gunny bag. The child died soon after being taken to Guwahati Medical College Hospital on October 18, 2007.

Biswas was sentenced to death by the Kamrup Additional Session Judge last year.

The court's judgment, passed last month but made public today, is in line with Supreme Court's latest trend of quantifying a life term in excess of the usual 14 years.
