Bangalore: In a unique surgery lasting seven-and-a-half hours, Dr Vidhyadhara S, a spine surgeon at Manipal Hospital, successfully rectified a severe spinal deformity in a 62-year-old-woman. The surgery was performed with minimal blood transfusion.
Due to the deformity, known as degenerative thoracolumbar rigid scoliosis, the middle of the woman's backbone was completely curved causing her acute back pain.
She was bedridden for over six months and was unable to walk.
The spinal deformity led to the curvature of her backbones, causing inability to carry out daily routine functions.
Her spinal curvature was over 45 degrees and coronal decompensation was 6 cm to left side.
Her spinal curvature is now back to normal with 16 screws and two rods holding it in normal alignment.
She was mobile a day after the surgery and was able to walk with minimal support after five days. The woman will be discharged from the hospital in a few days.
"People easily fail to notice degenerative scoliosis, thus leading a low quality life. There is no awareness among the public as well as practitioners regarding the possibility of this deformity getting treated safely," said Vidyadhara.
