Porbandar: Reports of shots being fired and loud explosions at the Porbandar naval base were wrong and most likely a hoax, said the city police after it concluded a three hour long search operation in and around the base.

"We received a call from one of the guards at the communication room of the naval base who claimed to have heard two or three shots being fired. We immediately responded and continued with a thorough search of the area but we did not find anything," said senior police officer Tarun Kumar Duggal.

"It appears to be a hoax," he added.

Gujarat, which shares a border with Pakistan, has been put on high alert ever since India conducted surgical strikes to target terrorist camps across the Line of Control last month. The Intelligence Bureau has alerted security agencies to step up vigil along the state's 1600 km long coastline.

The Navy, Coast Guard, and the Gujarat Coastal Police are all on the highest state of alert to thwart any infiltration bid from Pakistan based terrorists who could possibly use the sea route, the police said yesterday.

Security cover for vital installations like ports, oil refineries and famous temple sites at Dwarka and Somnath have been enhanced to prevent possible attacks following specific intelligence inputs.

During the 2008 Mumbai attacks, investigators found terrorists had used the sea route to come to India after hijacking a fishing trawler from the waters near Gujarat.
