Schoolgirls robbed, attacked with razor

New Delhi: Ridhika Bhasin and Tanvi Manchanda, class XII students of Carmel Convent School, located a stone's throw away from the Chinese Embassy, were attacked and robbed by an unidentified man, while on their way to a photostat shop to get their study material xeroxed in south Delhi on Tuesday. The miscreant injured the girls with a razor when they hesitated in handing over their jewellery.

According to the police, the incident took place at  around 11 am when the girls, after writing their exam, had come out of the school to a shop in Malcha Marg.

"They were near a photostat shop when the assailant carrying a sharp object in his hand threatened them for cash and jewellery items. The girls got frightened and handed over all the cash (over Rs 500) from their bags to the assailant. While my daughter was removing her earrings, the man suddenly attacked her with a razor and snatched the cash, even while Ridhika was in the middle of removing her earrings.

Fearing that he would be caught by locals as the girls were taking time in handing over their gold chain and earrings, the miscreant attacked them and fled," said Tanvi's father Rajan Manchanda, a businessman based in Gurgaon.

Ridhika (17), is a resident of East of Kailash and Tanvi (16), resides in Gurgaon. They were treated at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

"The attack was so brutal that the girls had to receive 42 and 35 stitches, respectively, on their hands. My daughter is in a state of trauma and is afraid to go to school. I hope this incident doesn't leave a scar on her life," said Nisha Bhasin, mother of Ridhika.

"An FIR has been registered and we are trying to trace the assailant who fled from the scene," said a police officer.

The school is located in a high-profile neighbourhood, where a large number of policemen are posted, but none of them saw anything. No PCR van was in the area when the incident took place. Meanwhile, security around the school has been beefed up as police suspect the attacker may try to repeat the act.
