Mumbai:
Hundreds of vehicles and thousands of residents from Mira Road and Bhayander were stranded in heavy traffic logjams on Ghodbunder Road, as Thane rural police started their drive to shore defences along the sea routes from Monday.
Thane rural police superintendent Vishwas Nangare-Patil personally oversaw security measures, while covering a distance of more than 11 km on bicycle. Later, he went on a patrol boat to supervise preparations on the coast.
Considering the threat of possible terror attacks from the sea route, the Thane rural police have decided to carry out the drive. Earlier the drive was conducted six months ago and now again started from Monday midnight. The entire stretch of Ghodbunder Road between Dahisar and Virar witnessed heavy traffic jam on Tuesday, since the police insisted on checking almost each vehicle that entered in the stretch.
Vehicular movement was jammed from the toll plaza at Dahisar till Malad. "Six months ago, we carried out the same drive. We understand the problems faced by daily commuters due to slow movement of traffic. But considering safety of the region it is a must," said Anil Patil, senior inspector of Kashimira police station.
