For the first time, noise level in India's cities will be monitored by a national tracking agency.
Not allowed: construction after 10 pm, or loud music. Hotels, malls, and public performances have also been given strict noise limits. The rules can be relaxed for two hours on 15 days in a year - each state can choose its own dates.
By September, monitoring stations will come up in seven cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata , Chennai , Hyderabad , Bangalore and Lucknow. Over the next two years, 18 other cities will get their own monitoring stations.
According to the World Health Organisation, 120 million people suffer from hearing disabilities, and long-term exposure to high levels of noise beyond 70 decibels can lead to heart problems.
