Shillong: Sander worth Rs 40 lakh seized

Shillong: Custom sleuths have seized a truck carrying red sander wood worth Rs 40 lakh, which was being ferried to Myanmar, at Aizawl in Mizoram.

Acting on a tip-off, the Customs officials intercepted the truck coming from Silchar in Assam at Chanmari area of Aizawl on Sunday, a statement issued by North East Customs commissioner S R Baruah said in Aizwal.

168 logs of red sander wood weighing about 4050 kgs concealed under 80 bags of cow-feed were found in the truck.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized goods belong to one Tluanga of Aizawl and it was being transported to Lawngtlai district of that state, Baruach said.

The wood, according to Baruah, was to be carried by boat on the Chhimpuitui river to Myanmar.

The driver and the handyman of the truck have been arrested and investigation was on.
