Shiv Sena Workers Protest Removal of Marathi Signboard, Buses Damaged

Kolhapur: The removal of a Marathi signboard in Maharashtra's Kolhapur led to violent protests by Shiv Sena workers who damaged some buses run by the Karnataka state transport.

The incident took place in the afternoon at around 4 pm. The passengers and drivers were asked to get off the buses before being attacked by the Shiv Sena workers.

According to the local police, nobody was injured in today's violence and the situation was brought under control. However, a case is being registered against those allegedly responsible for inciting the violence and causing damage to public property.

The Sena workers, led by local MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar, were irked by the signboard which stated that the Yellur village is a part of Maharashtra though the village comes under Karnataka's Belgaum district.

Maharashtra and Karnataka have had a long standing dispute over Belgaum district. The area is claimed by Maharashtra on linguistic grounds and the fact that it has historically been a part of the Bombay Presidency. Karnataka, on the other hand, maintains that Belgaum is a part of the state and the issue is a closed chapter.

Last year, Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil was booked by the Karnataka Police for promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race or language for his alleged provocative speech on the Belgaum issue.
